What to know about EV Charging Solutions

Electric vehicles are becoming increasingly popular in Australia as a greener, more cost-efficient alternative to petrol and diesel cars.

However, for EV owners, one of the biggest challenges is finding a reliable and convenient EV charging solution.

Fortunately, Australia has a range of EV charging solutions available to suit the needs of EV owners.

From public and private charging networks to home charging units, there are plenty of options available to keep your EV running.

Public Charging Networks

When it comes to public charging networks, they are a great option for EV owners who need to top up their batteries while out and about.

Australia has a growing network of public charging stations across the country, with many major cities and towns providing access to EV charging infrastructure.

In Australia, the EV charging solutions at the time of writing offer a range of charging speeds and payment options.

Most public charging networks also offer access to mobile apps, allowing EV owners to easily locate and pay for charging stations.

Private Charging Networks

As far as EV charging solutions go, private charging networks are another popular option in Australia, as they allow EV owners to access charging points without relying on public charging networks.

Private charging networks are usually operated by private companies and are available in many major cities and towns.

These private charging networks are typically available in commercial and residential complexes, as well as in some public parking lots.

Many private charging networks also offer access to mobile apps, allowing EV owners to easily locate and pay for more convenient EV charging solutions.

Home Charging Units - The Popular EV Charging Solution

Home charging units are ideal for EV owners who want to top up their batteries at home.

Home charging units can be installed at a residence or business, and are available in a range of sizes and power outputs to suit the needs of different EV owners.

Home charging units are installed by professional electricians, and can be wired into a home’s existing electrical system.

Home charging units also offer access to mobile apps, allowing EV owners to monitor their charging progress and set charging schedules.

Charging Speeds

Now that Australian law requires that licensed electrical contractors conduct the installation of all permanently wired electrical equipment it is one more reason to consult with Energy Solution Centre for all your EV Charging Solution needs in the Gold Coast and greater South East Queensland region.

When considering the right EV charging solution for you it is important to consider how you will be using your EV as well as the charging speeds accessible to you to ultimately determine if an EV lifestyle is for you.

With regards to the charging speeds, there are currently three differing levels/modes. They are as follows:

Level 1 / Mode 2 - A 10-15 Amp single-phase powerpoint is typically used in domestic homes and can be combined with a specialised cable that is usually provided with the vehicle. This method can add between 10 and 20 kilometres of range per hour when plugged in. It may be able to top up your daily use, but it is not likely to fully recharge a pure electric vehicle overnight.

Level 2 / Mode 3 - This AC EV charger can deliver up to 22kW (32 Amp, 3-phase). It is commonly installed in places such as homes, apartments, workplaces, shopping centers, hotels, etc. - anywhere the vehicle will be left for a while. This charger can add 40 to 100km of range to the vehicle per hour, depending on the model. Charging for an hour will be enough to cover most daily use, or the vehicle can be fully recharged overnight.

Level 3 / Mode 4 - This DC EV charger has a range of power levels from 25kW to 350kW (40 - 500 Amp, three-phase). It is commonly found in commercial and roadside locations and can provide faster recharging compared to Levels 1 and 2. With the lower end of the charger, up to 150km of range can be added per hour when plugged in. On the other hand, the upper end of the charger can fully recharge some electric vehicles within 10 to 15 minutes.

Cost of Charging - EV Charging Solutions that make sense!

The cost of EV charging in Australia is largely dependent on the type of charging station used and the energy provider. Level 2 chargers, which are the most common type of charger, can cost between $700 and $2500 to install, depending on the model and type of installation.

The cost of electricity for charging is also variable, with some providers offering discounts and other incentives.

Generally, the cost of charging an EV in Australia is comparable to that of fueling a petrol or diesel car but can be significantly lower if an energy provider is offering lower rates for EV charging or you have taken advantage of a solar and/or battery solution from Energy Solution Centre.

Passive Versus Smart Chargers – What’s the difference?

Passive chargers are a type of EV charger that simply supply a constant electrical current to the EV battery until it reaches a full charge. These chargers are often less expensive than smart chargers but lack the advanced features that come with smart chargers.

Smart chargers, on the other hand, use sophisticated software to optimise the charging process by utilising your solar more effectively. Smart Chargers take in account excess power from your solar, loads in your home, charge scheduling and more, all set by the homeowner via their app.

This allows for more efficient and effective charging, which can help maintain lower cost power bills and deliver more effective EV Charging.

Smart chargers may also come with features like the ability to schedule charging during off-peak hours or remotely monitor charging status through a mobile app.

While smart chargers are generally more expensive than passive chargers, they offer a number of benefits that may be worth the investment for some EV owners.

In conclusion EV charging solutions are becoming increasingly popular in Australia as more EV owners take to the roads.

From public and private charging networks to home charging units, there are plenty of options available to keep your EV running.

With the right charging solution, EV owners can enjoy the benefits of owning an electric vehicle without having to worry about finding a charging point.
