New from 1 October 2026

Queensland homes can now install a full 7kW EV charger, no network device required.

Queensland’s new rule

What changed for Queensland EV chargers on 1 October 2026?

Until October, Queensland’s electricity rules limited a single-phase home charger to 20A (about 4.6kW) unless a network-controlled device was fitted. Energex and Ergon Energy have withdrawn that rule. A single-phase charger can now run at up to 32A, about 7.4kW, with no extra device.

What that means for you:

  • 01Faster home charging.

A 7kW charger adds roughly 40 km of range an hour, against about 12 km from a standard power point.

  • 02No extra hardware cost

    on new single-phase installs.

  • 03Your electrician still checks maximum demand

and balances load across phases. That check decides whether you need an upgrade.

Already have a charger capped at 20A? We can tell you whether yours can be reconfigured to the higher limit.

Installation prices

How much does EV charger installation cost in Queensland?

Most Queensland homes pay $1,500 to $2,500 for a 7kW home EV charger, supplied and installed. If your switchboard needs an upgrade, the job starts from $2,800. You get the exact figure in writing before we start.

Every standard installation includes:

ESC electricians with Sigenergy EV chargers ready to install
  1. A dedicated circuit and circuit protection fitted in your switchboard

  2. Mounting and wiring by a licensed A-grade electrician

  3. Notification to Energex or Ergon Energy, lodged for you

  4. Testing with your car, app set-up and a walkthrough before we leave

EV charger installation cost depends on three things: the distance from switchboard to charger, your switchboard’s spare capacity, and the charger you choose.

The charger

Which home EV charger suits your home?

We install the Sigenergy EV charger range. It is one platform that starts as a single wall charger and grows into a full solar, battery and bidirectional system, all run from one app.

Every Sigenergy AC charger has a Type 2 connector, an IP65 weatherproof rating, scheduled charging in the mySigen app and dynamic load management, which stops the charger overloading your switchboard.

Single-phase or three-phase? Most homes are single-phase, and a 7kW smart EV charger covers a typical daily drive overnight. A 22kW EV charger needs three-phase power, and your car must be able to accept it.

Solar EV charging

Charge from your solar, not the grid

A charger running on grid power pays 28 to 32 cents per kWh. Paired with a Sigenergy SigenStor system, the charger becomes a solar EV charger: in 100% PV mode it fills the car only from spare rooftop solar. On a sunny Queensland day that adds 60 to 80 km of range from your own roof. Solar Boost mode tops up from the grid when clouds roll in.

Add battery modules and your car can charge overnight from stored solar. Add the DC charging module and the system becomes bidirectional charging (vehicle-to-home), so your car can power the house in a blackout.

Already have solar? We will show you the options for your system at the site check.

This is where a solar company beats a general electrician for charging at home. We set up the charger, inverter and battery as one system, from one team.

EV charger installation FAQs

Yes, but slowly. A standard 10A power point adds about 12 km of range an hour. A 7kW EV charger (often called Level 2) is around three times faster and runs on its own protected circuit.

Most Queensland homes built after 2000 can take a 7kW charger without one. Older homes may need an upgrade, or load management can avoid it. We check during the site visit and price it upfront.

Your electrician notifies the network. In South East Queensland that is Energex; in regional Queensland it is Ergon Energy. We lodge it for you.

No. In Queensland an EV charger must be installed by a licensed electrician. DIY wiring is illegal and can void your insurance.

Almost every EV sold in Australia uses a Type 2 connector, and every charger we install is Type 2, so it charges any of those electric vehicles. Older Type 1 cars can use an adapter cable.

Yes, with the right car and the Sigenergy DC charging module on a SigenStor battery. The car feeds the house when the grid goes down. Ask us which EVs support vehicle-to-home.

Yes. Send the make and model, and we will confirm compatibility and give you an installation-only price.

There is currently no Queensland Government rebate on home EV chargers. Pairing the charger with solar is the biggest saving.
