A solar battery for a house is a lithium-ion energy storage system that connects to your solar panel array and stores the electricity your panels generate during the day. Electricity you would otherwise export to the Energex grid for around 5 cents per kilowatt-hour.

Instead of that surplus power going to your neighbour's house at a loss, it sits in your battery and powers your home in the evening when your panels are no longer producing. When your battery is full and your solar panels are still generating, only then does excess power export to the grid.

Federal Cheaper Home Batteries Program

Thousands off upfront cost

The federal government's Cheaper Home Batteries Program subsidises the installation of home battery systems at eligible Queensland properties. The rebate amount is calculated per kWh of battery storage and applied directly to your installation price. You never see the money — it simply reduces what you pay.

To be eligible, the battery must be installed by a CEC-accredited installer (which Energy Solution Centre is), and the property must not have previously claimed the rebate. The program is currently active and available to Gold Coast homeowners.

Important: The rebate amount reduces progressively over time. The next reduction is scheduled for May 2026. Getting your system installed before this date locks in the higher rebate.

Small-scale Technology Certificates (STCs)

Applied at point of sale

If your battery installation includes a new solar panel system, the solar component generates Small-scale Technology Certificates (STCs) under the federal Renewable Energy Target. These are calculated based on your system size and Gold Coast's solar zone rating (Zone 3), and applied as a direct discount on your installation quote.

The STC rebate on solar panels is separate from the battery rebate and can be claimed simultaneously. A combined solar and battery package qualifies for both incentives at the same time.

Can I Add a Battery to My Existing Solar System?

In most cases, yes, and it is often simpler than people expect. The key variable is your existing inverter. If you already have a hybrid inverter from Sungrow, Fronius, GoodWe, or SolarEdge, adding a compatible battery is typically a half-day job for our Nerang team.

If your current inverter is a standard (non-hybrid) string inverter, you have two options: replace it with a hybrid model at the same time as the battery installation (which still qualifies for the full rebate), or install an AC-coupled battery like the Tesla Powerwall 3 or sonnenBatterie EVO, which connects on the AC side of your existing setup.

We assess your existing system as part of the initial quote process at no charge. We pull your Energex consumption data, inspect your switchboard, and confirm inverter compatibility before recommending anything.
